Course overview
This course provides learners with the basic knowledge and skills required when using height safety equipment while working at height.
The unit standard offered on this course is not intended for those working in the construction industry (which has its own unit standard) or those who work in highly specialised or high risk applications.
Course structure
This is a public course and includes both theoretical and practical sessions.
Following the theoretical session learners then practice identifying, selecting, inspecting, and donning appropriate height safety equipment. They also experience being at height in a controlled, simulated environment under trainer supervision.
Assessment of practical activities is not permitted by the units standard setting body in an simulated environment therefore post course, learners are to conduct work at height in a actual workplace environment under the supervision and observation of a competent verifier.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
-
identify the common types of height safety equipment employed on height work in the workplace.
-
identify suitable height work equipment.
-
identify suitable anchor points for fall and arrest systems.
-
employ height safety equipment in a workplace environment.
-
plan rescue techniques and emergency procedures for working at heights in the workplace.
Course prerequisites
None.
Assessment process
Theory assessment followed at a later date by practical demonstration of skills in a workplace environment.
The post-course practical activity must involve completing a designated job/task at height within a real workplace setting. Learners are required to detail the work performed, identify and select suitable height safety equipment, carry out pre-use safety inspections, recognise potential hazards, and outline appropriate control measures which is to be evidenced in a ‘on job assignment’ document that is submitted to Wood Training for review.
The job/task must be supervised by a competent verifier who is to review the learners OJA document (and any accompanying evidence which may include completed company checklists) and then complete the witness section of the OJA including a declaration of the learners overall knowledge, skills and abilities.
Certification
A Heights Safety Certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course and the post course on job assignment component.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.
