Course overview
The course enables students through knowledge and skills to assess their workplace for hazards and establish controls prior to carrying out operations in their workplace environment; and be able to identify and report any faults, and to shut down the MEWP after use.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of types of MEWPs, their suitability for purpose; and safety features.
- Demonstrate industry requirements in relation to legislation and the Best Practice Guidelines and the use of MEWPs.
- Assess a worksite and prepare to use an MEWP.
- Carry out operations in a workplace environment, report faults, and shut down an MEWP.
Course prerequisites
Unit Standard 23966 is the prerequisite for all practical machinery unit standards 23960-23964. The student must have a minimum of 6 months operator experience on a MEWP before they can undertake this course. We recommend students have risk assessment experience.
If a student is deemed inexperienced/not safe at any time during the training, they will be turned away and no fees reimbursed.
Assessment process
Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. Assessment involves inspecting a worksite for hazards, establishing controls, conducting pre- start checks on an MEWP and operating an MEWP in a controlled environment.
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course students will be issued with a MEWP certificate.
Revalidation/Refresher
Under the Best Practice Guidelines for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms – Section 6, 6.3, it is stated that refresher training should not exceed three years.
Items to Bring
- Photo ID.
- Steel-capped safety boots.
- Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom situation.
All PPE will be supplied for practical activity taking place at Manadon Street but students must supply their own safety boots.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
