Course overview
This course provides students with the knowledge to be a competent person in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of workplace hazardous substances as well as an understanding of the potential adverse effects these substances pose to people, property and the environment.
Course structure
US31290 is delivered online and includes topics that you work through at your own pace before you undertake the formal assessment.
After you contact Wood Training or book the course, we will send you a confirmation email with a link to the course and a self-enrolment key. You will be prompted in the system to set up a profile with information that we need for your enrolment.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of classifying hazardous substances.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe storage, tracking requirements, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances.
- Describe response to uncontrolled release of hazardous substances.
Certification
A Hazardous Substance Competent Person certificate will be issued on successful completion of all assessment requirements.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

- Access to a computer and stable internet (see page 2 for specifications).
- An email address.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
