Course overview
The students will be familiar with incident scene and patient assessments, the use of medical oxygen and associated equipment, AED and extrication devices in an emergency medical and trauma situation.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Assess and manage the scene of an emergency situation.
- Perform a primary survey to identify any life threats.
- Perform a secondary survey.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safe patient moving and lifting techniques without injury to self, patient or others.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of devices and/or techniques to manage patients in an emergency situation.
- Monitor patients and provide information in an emergency situation.
- Recognise signs of stress in self and apply appropriate strategies to mitigate effects.
- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of requirements relating to patient information and documenting events.
Course prerequisites
A current First Aid certificate with NZQA US 6400 or US 23406 that is no older than two years and three months, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills that are acceptable to Wood Training.
Assessment process
Theory assessment followed by practical assessment (including verbal questioning) which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve simulated emergency situations and will include primary and secondary surveys, patient handling and lifting techniques.
Certification
A Basic Pre Hospital Emergency Care certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.
Items to bring
- Photo ID.
- Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
Health
Must be physically capable of assisting with a casualty lift.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
