Course overview
This course provides students with an update on incident scene management and patient assessments; the use of medical oxygen and associated equipment; and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Provide PHEC response for a range of scenarios when a casualty is both conscious and unconscious.
- Monitor the blood glucose and blood pressure of a casualty.
- Measure and insert an OPA to maintain a patent airway for a casualty.
- Provide enhanced basic life support.
- Clear and maintain a clear and open airway for a casualty.
Course prerequisites
- A current First Aid certificate with NZQA US 6400 or US 23406 that is no older than two years and three months.
- Must hold US 14473, 25411 and 25412 or US 29321 or equivalent acceptable by Wood Training completed or refreshed within the last two years.
Assessment process
Theory assessment followed by practical assessment (including verbal questioning) which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.
Assessment will involve:
- Simulated emergency situations which may include heart attack, drowning, smoke inhalation, electrocution, natural disaster or motor vehicle accident for a conscious and unconscious casualty.
- Skills stations: casualty monitoring, using an OPA, provision of enhanced basic life support, maintaining clear and open airways.
Certification
A Basic Pre Hospital Emergency Care Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

- Photo ID.
- Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
