Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the types of work permits, the roles of those involved in the work permit system, and the requirements for receiving a work permit.
- Explain the preparatory requirements when applying for a work permit.
- Accept a work permit and undertake work under a permit.
- Describe and carry out the controls and actions to be taken at the end of a work period or upon the completion of work.
Course prerequisites
Competency in hazard management is required in order to undertake training to the common permit to work system.
This can be confirmed by the student holding either:
- 17602 Apply hazard identification and risk assessment procedures in the workplace; or
- 19522 Undertake job safety analysis; or
- 30265 Apply health and safety risk assessment to a job role; or

If it has been some time since formal hazard management training was completed we recommend students refamiliarise themselves with those skills as JSA completion forms part of this course.
Assessment Process
Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The practical consists of a permit compilation and completion with a final competency assessment. Delivered following the Common Permit to Work User Group Guidelines.
Certification
A Common Permit to Work certificate will be issued on successful completion of the assessment and the simulated practical assessment including two completed CPTW permits signed off by the assessor on the day of training.
