Course overview
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge of planning a confined space entry including use of a scenario to prepare an emergency plan and identify hazards and appropriate controls to ensure safe entry and work in a confined space. Students will then be given the opportunity to test out their plan in an authentic practical setting.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of confined spaces, and their permit notification and implementation requirements.
- Identify control measures to eliminate and minimise risk of hazards in confined spaces.
- Demonstrate knowledge of monitoring and confined space testing requirements.
- Describe responsibilities and duties of people entering confined spaces/ conducting observation duties for confined spaces.
- Identify hazards and controls within confined spaces.
- Develop an emergency procedure plan for a confined space.
- Complete documentation required for confined space entry.
Course prerequisites
It is recommended that students have achieved Workplace Safety Plus or equivalent, or have related experience.
Assessment process
Theory assessment which takes place when student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required, followed by a practical scenario.
This optional practical component while part of the course is not mandatory in order to receive an Achieved grade. All students will have the opportunity to enter the space and participation is encouraged.
Certification
A Plan a Confined Space Entry certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

- Photo ID.
- Comfortable clothing suitable for classroom.
- Covered-in footwear.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
