Course overview
This course is designed to provide students with foundation information that will develop and enhance skills and knowledge as a Health and Safety Representative in the workplace.
Course structure
The course is a theoretical session. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Explain the role and functions of the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and its Regulations.
- Explain the role of a HSR and as an advocate for workers.
- Identify the obligations of a PCBU and WorkSafe NZ towards the HSR.
- Describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating with workers and management.
- Describe and demonstrate the powers and obligations that a HSR has in terms of issuing a provisional improvement notice (PIN) and how and when to direct a worker to cease unsafe work.
Course prerequisites
None.
Assessment process
Theory assessment which takes place when the student is ready.
Certification
A Health and Safety Representative certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every three years.
Items to bring
- Photo ID.
- Appropriate streetwear can be worn.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
