Course overview
This course is designed to meet further offshore emergency training requirements for personnel working in the offshore oil and gas industry who will be supplied with a Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS) during offshore helicopter travel.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate, in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment and follow procedures in preparing for and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following ditching.
- Demonstrate that they can use basic firefighting equipment effectively, and use self rescue techniques in low visibility and completely obscured visibility situations e.g. smoke filled areas.
- Demonstrate that they can perform basic first aid.
Course prerequisites
The FOET (with CA-EBS) is open to those who have a valid (in-date) OPITO-approved BOSIET (with CA-EBS), BOSIET (with EBS), TBOSIET, FOET (with CA-EBS), FOET (with EBS) or TFOET certificate.
If pre-requisite training took place at another centre a copy of this certificate must be forwarded to enable a check against OPITOs database.
Medical requirements
All students participating in this course, which has physically demanding and potentially stressful elements, must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.
Prior to undertaking the course, we must be provided with a copy of one of the following:
a) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening form – with a sign-off from a General Practitioner, OR
b) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening form – with a current OEUK (formerly OGUK) medical (for going offshore), OR
c) a Wood Training OPITO Medical Declaration and Screening form - with a current and approved equivalent of an offshore medical (organisation specific).
We must receive these documents no later than 48 hours before course commencement. If not received within this timeframe, you may be declined entry to the course. This decision will be taken on a case by case basis.
Note: On the date you undertake shallow-water CA-EBS training, and prior to entering the water in which this takes place, each student must read and sign a statement, that to the best of their knowledge and belief, they have no (current/past) medical condition which makes them unfit to participate in the training.
Assessment process
A multi-choice assessment is undertaken after delivery of the first aid, helicopter and CA-EBS theory components. Practical assessment takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. If a student is deemed not competent, the process for reassessment will be advised by the instructor.
Certification
An OPITO approved FOET with CA-EBS certificate will be awarded to students who successfully complete theory and practical course components. Results submitted to OPITO.
Revalidation
Valid for 4 years. Must be renewed within 4 years prior to expiry date, otherwise a full BOSIET is required.
Forward Dating
Refresher training (FOET) can be undertaken up to three months prior to the expiry date marked on your existing in-date valid BOSIET or FOET certificate. This allows you to book in advance at a time to suit your schedule without losing any time.

Students should take this into consideration when arranging for travel after course completion and refer to their company HSE department for advice.
