Course overview
To provide the necessary skills in the use of fire extinguishers and fixed hose reels, along with knowledge of fire behavior and basic chemistry of fire.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the fire classes and fire suppression techniques.
- Select and implement a strategy to deal with fire.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the chemistry of fire and the basic principles of the physics of fire.
Course prerequisites
None.
Assessment process
Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required. The assessment will involve use of different fire extinguishers on live fire.
Certification
A Fire Science and Extinguishers certificate of will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.
Items to bring
- Photo ID.
- Comfortable clothing suitable for wearing under Fire Fighting attire.
- Socks.

Safety steel cap boots if training at WT fire ground, or is a company requirement at customers premises.

Covered in footwear if steel caps are not a company requirement at customer premises.
- Water bottle.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
