Course overview
This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to manage a variety of first aid emergencies including a collapsed person/s, life threatening bleeding, shock, and airway obstruction.
Building on these skills, learners should feel confident to manage a scene by assessing situational hazards and mitigating risk, and provide first aid for a range of medical conditions and major injuries.
Course structure
The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- Provide basic life support.
- Manage a foreign body airway obstruction.
- Manage first aid for life threatening bleeding.
- Provide first aid management for a person in shock.
- Provide first aid.
- Manage first aid in an emergency situation.
Course prerequisites
None.
Assessment process
This course contains theoretical assessment (all units including some questions to answer) and practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.
Assessment includes demonstration of the stable side position and simulated emergency situations from a range of scenarios:
6400: one medical condition and two major injuries.
6401: one trauma and two medical conditions.
6402: CPR adult or child and infant; choking adult or child and infant; bleeding and person in shock.
Certification
A New Zealand First Aid Certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that revalidation training occurs regularly. NZQA and Toitū te Waiora identify this as every two years.

- Photo ID.
- Comfortable clothing suitable for participating in practical exercises.
- Covered-in footwear.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
