Course overview

This course provides students with an update on current best practice and opportunity to demonstrate continued competency in wearing and operating a self contained breathing apparatus.

 

Course structure

The course is a combination of theoretical and practical sessions. Students are practically assessed continuously during the course.

 

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Commission a SCBA. 
  • Undertake high and low pressure tests.
  • Don, start up and wear a SBCA in irrespirable atmospheres. 
  • Shut down and doff.
  • Re-commission a SCBA.
  • Act as Entry Control Officer. 

 

Course prerequisites

Participants are required to sign a declaration that they are in good health (have no medical, physical or psychological conditions that would affect their ability to succeed in this training) OR provide a current (less than six months old) medical certificate. Wood Training reserve the right to stop training for health and safety purposes, e.g. failure to secure a facial seal. 

Current NZQA US 3272 or a documented equivalent that is deemed acceptable by Wood Training.

Assessment process

Theory assessment followed by practical assessment which takes place when the student is ready/has shown that they can perform all tasks required.  The assessment will involve the preparation and use of SCBA. 

 

Certification

A Wear and Operate a Breathing Apparatus in General Emergencies Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of this course.

 

Revalidation/Refresher

Items to bring

  • Photo ID.
  • Proof of prerequisite courses.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for wearing under Fire Fighting attire.
  • Socks.
  • Covered in footwear.
  • Water bottle.
  • Change of clothes and towel for available shower. 

 

Health  

Refer to prerequisites 

Research shows that you are more susceptible to heat distress disorders if you consume alcohol within 24 hours of training with live fire. We recommend you do not consume alcohol 24 hours before training nor over the days of training.

 

Eligibility

Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:

  • Permanent Residents,
  • Australian Citizens, or
  • Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
