Course overview
The objective of this course is for the students to refresh their current knowledge of helicopter landing officer (HLO) duties at in installations in accordance with current industry standards.
Course structure
The course is theoretical but also includes a visit to a local heliport for familarisation. Students are assessed continuously during the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students on a petrochemical off-shore installation will be able to:
- Identify helicopter operation and safety equipment and procedures.
- Assess helicopter hazards and their consequences.
- Use and interpret documentation and maintain reports for helicopter landing operations.
- Locate and explain emergency procedures and contingency plans for helicopter landings.
Course prerequisites
Must hold US 9581.
Assessment process
Theory assessment which takes place when the student is ready. A post course on job assessment component is required to be completed offshore and includes the HLO performing a range of tasks before and during multiple helicopter landings.
Certification
A Helicopter Landing Officer Refresher certificate will be issued on successful completion of the On Job Assignment (OJA).
Revalidation/Refresher
To maintain current competency, it is recommended that refresher training occurs regularly. Depending on the industry you work in this may vary. Current Wood Training recommendation is every two years.

- Photo ID.
- Comfortable clothing for theory sessions.
- Covered-in footwear.
Eligibility
Students eligible to study with Wood Training are:
- Permanent Residents,
- Australian Citizens, or
- Holders of work-visas who are required to undertake training by their employer.
